Our Main Band takes part in brass contests each year but also retains a strong focus on playing performing at local events.
We've been a firm feature of annual Cheltenham Lido Opening for many years and also lead the Remembrance Parade at the Cheltenham Cenotaph. We play in Stroud, Stratford and Evesham as part of the 'Bands in the Park' season, entertaining those who are out and about enjoying the best of the British summer. For many years, we have also played at The Little Vintage Show in Cambridge (Glos).
In recent years the band has seen contesting success, gaining back to back promotions in 2016 and 2017 from the fourth to the second section, with a visit to the National Finals in 2017. Following two years in the Second section we will find ourselves back in the Third Section for 2019.
We rehearse on Mondays from 7.30pm and and Friday Nights from 7.45pm.
Our Training Band is the ideal environment for anyone picking up a brass instrument for the first time. We have players who are still in Primary School playing alongside the young at heart who have decided to take up a new hobby in their retirement. Training Band is also a perfect step back in to music for those who have not played in a while and are looking for a pressure free path back in to banding.
Guided by Musical Director, Colin Forster, and supported by main band players who give encouragement, the Training Band also now performs in its own right at many local events such as school fayres and community days.
In addition to the Friday night Training Band rehearsal, for those less experienced Roger Dolman runs an Improvers Group on a Monday night. For absolute beginners there is a Starting Players group that rehearses concurrently with the Training Band, we can also offer a few one-to-one lessons to help you choose an instrument and start playing your first few notes.
If you are considering joining any part of Cheltenham Silver Band, please do get in touch. We welcome visitors at our rehearsals if you would like to come and meet the MDs and players or simply sit at the back and get a feel for how we work.
We do have a range of instruments which are available on loan if you do not have your own. We would invite you to come to rehearsals for a month, with no obligation. If you decide that banding life is a great choice (and we are sure you will!) then there are a couple of short forms we would ask you to complete for our records.
We are a registered charity, and rely on income from events and player donations to cover our overheads such as rent. While we would never exclude a player who could not donate, our suggested donations for playing with band are as follows:
If you are a UK tax payer, please complete a Gift Aid form, which will give us a much needed boost to these figures. The donations can be made annually, quarterly, or monthly as you wish.
